Program Note

Sync or Swarm was composed during the summer of 2015 in collaboration with Faculty and Staff from the Interlochen Arts Camp. It was written specifically for a group of talented intermediate students as a pedagogical exploration of contemporary music, utilizing common violin techniques. The work is comprised of six sections, alternating between strictly synchronized and limited aleatoric passages, that reflect the ordered chaos of the natural surroundings in which they were created. During the aleatoric sections performers are encouraged to move freely about the performance space, creating a more complex spacialization that mimics the chaotic behavior of natural swarms.
