Program Note
On a seemingly ordinary Monday in November, the world of contemporary music experienced an extraordinary loss with the passing of Elliott Carter. A kind-hearted composer of intellectual rigor and artistic sensibility, Carter—who was one month away from celebrating his 104th birthday—made significant contributions to the musical art in almost every modern medium, with much of his creative output being completed in the last thirteen years of his life. Twice awarded the Pulitzer Prize in music, Elliott Carter and his compositions continue to inspire generations of artists, theorists, and historians. November 5, 2012 is a humble tribute to the life and work of this influential musician, combining aspects of Carter's temporal experimentation with older forms of algorithmic composition. The pitch material is derived entirely from the intervallic relationships that occur within the first eight notes of the clarinet solo (a slightly modified chant from the Kyriale of the Roman Catholic Church), which occurs at the outset of this piece.
