Writing notes
Lowercase letters start at middle C: c d e f g a b covers middle C up to the B above it. Add apostrophes to go higher — c’ is an octave up, c’’ two. Capital letters sit in the octave below middle C: C up to B. Repeat the capital to drop further, so CC is an octave below C. You can go four steps either way at most, from CCCC at the bottom to c’’’’ at the top.
Everything else
| c4 d8 e16 | The number is the note value: 4 is a quarter, 8 an eighth, and so on. Leave it off and the previous value carries over, so c4 d e is three quarters. |
| c4. c4.. | One dot, or two. |
| c+ c- cn | Sharp, flat, natural. The key signature is applied for you, so in G major a plain f is already F sharp. Writing n always prints a natural sign, even where the key signature makes it unnecessary. |
| r4 r8 | Rests. |
| <c e g>4 | A chord. The duration goes outside the brackets. |
| c4 ~ c4 | Ties two notes into one longer sound. |
| trip{a b c} | A triplet. Use dup{a b} for a duplet. |
| | | A barline. Add them where you want bars to fall, or leave them out and bars fill automatically from the time signature. |
| # my note | Anything after # is ignored, so you can leave yourself reminders. |
