Program Note

The result of a collaborative exploration—between Fredonia clarinetists Andrew Seigel, Elizabeth (Widzinski) Hanlon, and Andrew Martin Smith—of the sonic possibilities inherent within a demi-clarinet ensemble, D.E.M.I. was completed and premiered during the spring semester of 2018. Using Morse code as a slightly humorous, fundamental, and grammatical generator of musical structure, the composer fashions a strange soundscape that is paradoxically novel and familiar, full of expressive lyricism, intertwining melodies, and rhythmic vitality.
