Program Note

aditus, aditus
(n.) an approach, access, attack, entrance, chance, opportunity, means, way, or beginning

Owing a significant debt to Terry Riley's renowned work In C, Aditus is a musical composition that is to be performed by any number of monophonic instruments, which are divided into two discrete groups. Each group performs a series of musical cells in a predetermined order. Performers, accompanied by a relentless metronomic pulse, are free to repeat specific cells within a prescribed range, and they may choose to alter the timbre of their instrument, by any desirable means, at any point within the composition. The overall shape of this piece is maintained in every performance; however, due to the aleatoric nature of this work, the surface of the musical landscape can never be duplicated.
